Tania’s story:

Tania established her boutique photography studio in 1997 after working as a commercial assistant photographer for a leading Australian industrial and architectural photographer.  Assignments took them all over the globe.

In just one year and 180 flights later, her passport showed she and her boss had visited Hong Kong (no less than eight times), Singapore, Shanghai, Vietnam, Japan, USA, Indonesia, Thailand and remote areas of Australia.

It was during this time that Tania gained valuable experience at the highest level of Commercial photography.  Fascinating annual report assignments for “Blue Chip” Australian companies included CSR (concrete and construction product suppliers; sugar producers), Leighton (infrastructure and construction company) and Rio Tinto (mining and resources group).

Projects that were highlights for Tania while assisting included being flown by military style helicopter to a remote Gold Mine in a Borneo jungle and having to pose in a fireproof suit pretending to make gold ingots near a furnace; travelling by barge with 150kg of equipment to document supply of products for the construction of the Hong-Kong airport; construction of the Australian Embassy in Hanoi; a new resort in Da Nang, located at an old USA Military base used in the Vietnam War; a new Glass Wool factory in a remote area of China; a concrete plant servicing Disneyworld in Orlando; photography of medical equipment used in a hospital in Shanghai, progress photography of the Sydney Casino;  Melbourne ‘Ring Roads’ Infrastructure; Sugar Cane Plants and Farms in Far North Queensland; open cut Mining in Western Australia and underground coal mining in NSW.

After all of this travelling came a great desire to work locally and travel less.  Tania established a local Sydney client base for commercial photography and domestic family portraiture.

Tania’s studio was originally based in Fairlight, near Manly, relocating to larger commercial premises in Brookvale in 2009.

Tania Niwa has a passion for excellence, which you will see expressed in the personalised artworks she creates for Sydney families.  Tania has always had a passion for fine art, art history and photography.  Tania’s involvement in art and photography from a very early age has been very influential in developing her distinctive style of portraiture.

Tania’s ever-growing collection of commissioned and private work is not only testimony to her love of photography, but also her ongoing mission to strive for new levels of excellence.  It is no wonder, for Tania Niwa is an international multi-award winning photographer who continues to gather accolades from individual clients, companies and photography judges, worldwide.  Amongst many other achievements Tania is one of the youngest Fellows of the New Zealand Institute of Photography (with two gold bars) and is one of only 16 Grand Master of Photography (with five gold bars) with the Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP).

Another facet to Tania’s photography is the influence of her Maori heritage. Her ancestry provides an ongoing source of inspiration for her personal collection of tribal images spanning nearly two decades. Her spirited tribal portraiture blends ancient tradition with a modern interpretation. Tania’s fascination with cultures, combined with her own heritage has helped weave a unique style of documentary and high design. Tania’s affinity for indigenous cultures and recognition of her talent by other leading artists and agencies in NZ has lead to ongoing cultural and art related assignments in her home land.

Tania’s first major success of her career came in 1997 when at the age of 24yrs became the youngest ever New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography Photographer of the Year.  At the time Tania was still working as assistant photographer.  Her folio of successful images were taken on assignment in Vietnam.

As part of her prize for winning the coveted title, Tania received Canon professional camera equipment, and so a long lasting relationship was born with Canon Professional Services (CPS).

Tania enjoys the support of being a member of Canon CPS. CPS is Canon’s support network for working professional photographers. It is designed to provide photographers with the best professional support service – bar none.

Alan Brightman, Professional Imaging Manager, Canon Australia has followed Tania’s career and is a great advocate for her talent as a portrait photographer.  When Tania launched her education division offering photography workshops a few years ago, Alan was very happy for Canon Australia to endorse them.
